The reason he still visits the mother & sister of his best friend...to try & make sure they are cared for. Now he's looking for a bride - one that does not require love & will never know & judge him about that horrible night.
After several weeks of absence (in which he was searching for a bride) Auric makes his obligatory visit the the Meadows home. A time that Daisy has made up her mind that if she can find the fabled "Heart of a Duke" necklace, the necklace that has brought true love to people around her, she can at last capture the heart of Auric. As Daisy searches for the necklace, Auric starts to realize that Daisy is no longer a little girl but a beautiful woman. A fact brought home after her mother has a brief period of awareness in which she helps Daisy to shine. No longer a wallflower Daisy enjoys the attention while continuing her quest for the necklace. While Daisy is enjoying the attention Auric is not. When he realizes his feelings for Daisy will he be able to accept them despite his guilt? Will Daisy still love him when she finds out his horrible secret? Can he convince Daisy that he loves her & is not offering marriage out of a sense of obligation?
The twists & turns, ups & downs along this adventure is highly entertaining. Ms. Caldwell does an amazing job of bringing flawed characters to life & giving them purpose. An excellent read & highly recommended. Even though it is part of a series it can be read along but might I HIGHLY suggest reading the entire series...you won't be disappointed!

Loved by a Duke The Heart of a Duke Book 4 edition by Christi Caldwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Since I'm reading the whole series I had to read this one. Wasn't sure if I'd like it since the H, the Duke of Crawford was not a compelling character in the prior books. However, since the first book I read in this series was the 8th book, which was excellent, I'm drawn to finish the whole series. And though it was slow at times, the emotion of the last 20% of the book is dynamic. The H of this book is not a rogue . the h is not a perfect slender English lady. They are , however, perfect for each other. If I have a complaint, it would just be that the language of the author becomes predictable after reading several books in the series, to the point I know what is coming next in a line or paragraph . The stories are not all the same, though.
Lady Daisy Meadows is a smart, bold and fearless character who desperately wants not to be invisible. Invisibility happened after the death of her beloved brother. Auric, Lord Crawford, best friend of Daisy's brother and good friend to Daisy, only sees Daisy as a younger sister. A big problem for Daisy since she loves Auric. Lots of layers of emotions reside in this story with grief an overwhelming emotion along with guilt. How two people manage an HEA is the focus here along with forgiveness and growth and good friends as important components. Ms. Caldwell deftly weaves a difficult story in such a way that what could be a depressing book is not, rather it is uplifting and empowering.
The story's premise is good. One man tortured by the violent death of his best friend leads Auric, the 8 th Duke of Crawford, to make obligatory visits to his friends mother and sister regularly for 7 years. The heroine Daisy Meadows, has loved Auric for 10 years. Auric feels responsible for the death of her brother Lionel, and he treats her as a little sister and feels he must look out for her, even to the extent of trying to find a decent gentleman to wed her.
The problem is, Auric is so burdened by guilt, that he refuses to act upon his feelings for Daisy. After awhile, his guilt, and Daisy's love become redundant. I feel like I read the exact same musings over and over again. The author should know that the reader gets it after reading it once and shouldn't be forced to read the characters thoughts over and over again.
I loved it, that simple. I just love Christi's writing. She writes very good stories BUT her characters are what really "does" it for me. This story didnt disappoint at all. It is part of a series that I have adored from the first word of the first book. I enjoy her twists, her deep layers and her blending of a good assortment of secondary characters. This book can be a stand alone but as I have stated, if you have not read the entire series from the start, do yourself a favor...please... Read the other books. You will not be disappointed. Now, I will wait impatiently for Christ's next installment...sigh, hate when I finish a book I love, I just want MORE.
